No Hands Land

The Pudding found that front pockets on women’s jeans are significantly smaller than front pockets on men’s jeans. The thorough investigation of the top 20 men’s and women’s jeans in the U.S. concluded that on average the front pockets in women’s jeans are 48 percent shorter and 6.5 percent narrower than men’s pockets.

How does this disparity translate into real holding costs for people trying to use a front pocket on a pair of women’s jeans? A women’s jean can only fit 10 percent of the average woman’s hand while the average men’s jean can fit 100 percent of the average man’s hand. When it comes to holding other basic items, like smartphones or wallets, women’s jeans by and large cannot perform this basic task, according to this analysis. Fashion geared towards women prizes look at the expense of comfort or function.

In the study the front pockets presented the biggest functional disparity between men and women’s jeans, while back pockets were more equitably sized.
