Hurricane Maria Deaths 46 Times Higher Than Thought
According to the results of a long-awaited investigation, Hurricane Maria killed 2,975 people on the island of Puerto Rico. Ever since the government placed the official death toll at just 64 back in December 2017, there has been fierce controversy about just how many people actually lost their lives.
Researchers from George Washington University’s Milken Institute School of Public Health and the University of Puerto Rico were commissioned to find the true death toll and the government announced it was revising its official numbers in accordance with their findings. The hurricane struck Puerto Rico in September 2017, causing an estimated $90 billion worth of damage.
