Tech Community Divided on Google's China Plans

Eight years after Google decided to pull its search engine from China because of alleged cyber attacks against U.S. tech companies and Chinese human rights activists, the company is reportedly considering a return to Asia’s economic powerhouse.

Considering that many people still question the human rights situation in China, Google’s reversal of its stance on censoring its search engine for the giant Chinese market turned some heads and led to heated discussions at Google’s headquarters as well as outside the company.

According to a poll conducted by the anonymous workplace community app Blind, the tech community is divided on the search giant’s plans to return to China. While the majority of Google employees who took part in the survey (472) support the company’s plans, referring to companies such as Apple and Dell doing business and even manufacturing in China, tech workers outside of Google are largely opposed to the company building a censored search engine for the Chinese market.
