India has burst onto the smartphone manufacturing scene
In 2014, there were a mere two mobile phone manufacturing units in India. Fast forward to 2017 though, and India is now home to 123 - bursting onto the scene in an impressive manner. Among the new units is the recently opened (and currently world's largest) mobile factory - run by Samsung. Minister of Electronics and Information Technology, Ravi Shankar Prasad, commented on the astonishing rise via Twitter, adding that this upturn in Indian electronics manufacturing has led to the creation of 400,000 new jobs.
As Quartz reports though, the Counterpoint Research data which backs up the politician's claim doesn't quite tell the full story. While the growth is truly impressive, the manufacturing units are still often assembling parts which were made in other countries. Despite this, Jaipal Singh, senior analyst for International Data Corporation India, remains positive that this is only just the beginning, saying: “The first step is to be able to shift assembly to India. Some components are also being manufactured locally already.”
