Where Harley-Davidson Exports its Bikes
President Trump’s protectionist trading policy seems to be backfiring on the U.S. economy. By imposing tariffs on the European steel and aluminum industry, the president provoked counter tariffs on Harley-Davidson motorcycles. With Europe its most important export market, the Wisconsin company announced that it will move parts of its production overseas. Even though Trump is trying to strengthen local manufacturing, according to Harley-Davidson, this “represents the only sustainable option to make its motorcycles accessible to customers in the EU and maintain a viable business in Europe.” With the small Middle Eastern and African market right next to Harley’s European future offshoot, it is conceivable that this region could also be supplied through the company’s overseas production channel as the market is easily reachable via the European mainland.
