Where Credit Card Debt Is Highest And Lowest In The U.S.

When it comes to the total level of U.S. credit card debt, the country's most populous states lead the way. California is in first position with a staggering $106.8 billion. followed by Texas with $67.3 billion. The picture is different on a per capita basis, however, with Alaska in first position. That's according to figures released by the New York state comptroller's office.

At the end of last year, an average Alaskan resident had a credit card balance of $4,270, over $1,000 higher than the national average of $3,100. New Jersey is the second worst state for credit card debt with $3,910 per capita while Hawaii comes third with $3,860. The south is better off and Mississippi has the lowest average debt per capita with $2,020.
