Health Costs, Tobacco Revenues & Prevention Spending

According to the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids, the states only spend little on tobacco prevention campaigns. “Despite receiving massive amounts of annual revenue from tobacco taxes and the state tobacco lawsuit settlements with the cigarette companies, the vast majority of states are still failing to invest the amounts recommended by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC),” the campaigners lament. As our infographic shows the health costs associated with smoking amount to a whopping $170 billion annually in the United States.
