eSports Prize Money Is Escalating Quickly

After Epic Games, the maker of Fortnite, announced the provision of $100 million to fund prize pools for the upcoming first season of official Fortnite competitions, there is little doubt left that 2018 will be another record year in terms of eSports prize money.

In 2017, worldwide aggregate prize money amounted to $121 million according to EEDAR, a total that doesn’t include a single dollar from Fortnite, the world’s most popular online game at the moment.

As the following chart illustrates, eSports prize money has climbed to new records for seven years in a row now with no end to the upward trend in sight. As millions of viewers tune in to follow professional tournaments, the eSports market will likely continue to flourish for years to come.
