Who's Importing American Peanut Butter

On May 1, the United States government will have to decide whether to extend trade tariff exemptions for imports of steel and aluminum from the European Union. Should the EU no longer be exempt from the tariffs, the economic bloc has plans to retaliate by upping its own tariffs on imports of U.S. products, among them peanut butter.

As our infographic shows, the European Union (in this case including non-EU European states Norway and Switzerland) accounted for a 19.6 percent share of U.S. peanut butter exports, making it the second largest U.S. peanut butter trading partner. Only the Canadian hunger for the American peanut paste is bigger, according to the figures compiled by the American Peanut Council.

Fun fact: peanuts aren’t really nuts but legumes.
