Russia's Recent History Of Deadly Fires
On Sunday, Russia experienced a deadly fire at a leisure complex in the Siberian city of Kemerovo that resulted in the deaths of at least 64 people, 41 of whom were children. Thousands of people protested on the streets in the wake of the tragedy, venting their anger at Russian officials. Vladimir Putin also arrived in the city and blamed "criminal negligence" for the blaze. He has said that Wednesday will be a day of national mourning across the country.
Russia has experienced several deadly fires since the turn of the century, according to RFE/RL. In December 2009, the Lame Horse fire in the Khromaya Loshad nightclub (Lame Horse nightclub in Russian) in the city of Perm claimed over 150 lives, making it the most devastating fire in recent years.
