Wyoming Still Leading in Coal Production

Wyoming is still America's biggest coal producing state, according to figures by the U.S. Energy Information Administration. However, like the rest of the top coal states (except Texas), its production has been in decline, by 20.9 percent from 2015 to 2016. Colorado had the biggest decline in short tons, by 33.1 percent. It's interesting to note that the two biggest coal producing states, Wyoming and West Virginia, are the two states that have most recently seen the biggest decline in population (-1 and -0.7 percent respectively), according to the U.S. Census Bureau.
