China's Communist Party By The Numbers
Chinese President Xi Jiping has revealed the composition of his country's top ruling council. Five new appointments have been made to the seven-member Politburo Standing Committee during the 19th National Congress, though crucially, there is no clear successor in the all-male group. None of the new members is young enough to take over from Xi at the end of his second term in 2022, raising questions about whether he intends to rule beyond that point.
The following infographic uses CNN data to show the structure of China's Communist Party. Along with those seven members in the Politburo Standing Committee, there are 205 members in the party's Central Committee which meets once a year during its five-year term. The National Congress, which was held in Beijing over the past week, involves around 2,300 delegates. All in all, the Communist Party of China has just under 90 million members. If that was a country, it would be the world's 16th most populous.
