German Election 2017

The Far-Right is gaining ground in Europe

After the General Elections in Germany yesterday Chancellor Angela Merkel of the Conservative party CDU is heading for a fourth term. The second message from the ballots is one much dreaded by many in the country: The "Alternative für Deutschland" (AfD), a right-wing nationalist party, got nearly 13 percent and will be the third largest power - the first time in Germany a far-right group has won seats in the federal Parliament since World War II.

Many people turned away from the two big parties CDU and the Social Democrats (SPD), who got their worst result in a federal election ever. Disenchantment from the major parties has been a topic in Europe throughout: Our chart shows the outcome of the four major elections in Europe of this year, with the far-right gaining ground in most of them.
