Google's Current Employee Demographics

An internal 10-page long memo by former Google employee James Damore leaked on Monday sparked a heated debate about diversity in tech companies. According to The Washington Post, companies in the Silicon Valley like “Google, Facebook and Uber, have said they are trying to improve hiring and working conditions for women.” Despite many efforts ranging from broad-ranged interviews of candidates to sponsored coding classes, internships and mandatory “unconscious bias” training sessions for employees, diversity numbers have barely changed at Google, Axios found.

Here’s a look at Google’s current employee status: while women account for at least 48 percent of the workforce in the non-tech sector, only 20 percent make up Google’s tech division. The latter however is more diverse in ethnic terms since Whites do only have a slight majority (53 percent) over the non-tech sector (61 percent) and Asian employees take a much stronger hold in this area (39 percent vs 23 percent in non-tech).
