The U.S. Department of State in the World

Amid controversy the United States has opened its embassy in Jerusalem on Monday. U.S. President Donald Trump had decided to recognize Jerusalem as Israel’s de facto capital and move America’s embassy in December 2017.

The inauguration of the new embassy, which was moved from Tel Aviv, took place on Monday, which marks the 70th anniversary of the founding of Israel in 1948. The move has enraged Palestinians who envision East Jerusalem – occupied by Israel in the 1967 Middle East war – as the capital of a future separate Palestinian state.

As the below infographic shows, the Department of State has around 76,000 employees worldwide of whom some 9,430 are dispatched U.S. foreign and civil service staff working overseas in 276 missions in 191 countries, as of March 2018. However, the biggest part of the workforce (50,150) consists of locally employed staffers, according to figures provided by the Department of State.
