India has the fastest growing developer population on GitHub and is on its way to becoming the largest community of developers in the world by 2028. This is according to a new report by GitHub, a code hosting and collaboration platform owned by Microsoft. As the following chart shows, India had the second highest number of web developers on GitHub in 2024, following only after the United States. India surpassed China for the first time in 2022 and has held the position since.
While the U.S. still has by far the largest population of GitHub contributors worldwide, India stands out for its rapid growth since 2013. According to the site, it now has more than 17 million developers. Brazil has also seen rapid growth of its GitHub developers community, partly driven by students using the GitHub Education program.
The top 20 developer communities have mostly remained in the same positions except for the Philippines, which has leapfrogged Australia to now be in rank 18, and Pakistan, which has overtaken Poland to place in rank 20. GitHub explains that the “rise of these non-English, high-population regions is notable given that it is happening at the same time as the proliferation of generative AI tools, which are increasingly enabling developers to engage with code in their natural language.”
In 2024, India also had the second-highest number of GitHub Education users, second-highest number of contributors to public generative AI projects on GitHub and the second-highest number of contributions to open source projects.
