As the year finally comes to a close, Spotify’s much-beloved series of ‘Wrapped’ personalized playlists is back. The Swedish audio streaming service has once more pulled together its annual round up of nostalgic and tailored collections of listeners’ top artists and songs, using an algorithm that ranks streams, either online or offline, that users have listened to for a minimum of 30 seconds. At the same time, the company has revealed some of the industry’s latest insights based on its analytics such as the globe’s most streamed artists on Spotify (this year the Puerto Rican rapper, Bad Bunny) as well as the most streamed song (championed by Harry Styles with “As It Was.”)
Looking at data from Statista’s Global Consumer Survey, it’s clear that whatever Spotify is doing is working, as it has become a firm favorite of the media streaming giants for people living in the UK. Out of around 1,500 UK respondents that had bought music from one of the 12 platforms included in the poll in the past 12 months, more than half said that they had purchased streaming services on Spotify. Amazon Music was the second most popular choice, with 43 percent picking it. Popularity then tails off, with Apple Music used by around a third of respondents while iTunes saw only 21 percent of respondents pay for it.
