The District of Columbia had the highest rates of violent crime in the United States in 2020, according to the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s data. Nearly 1,000 cases of violent crime per 100,000 people were recorded in the state. At the other end of the spectrum placed Maine (109 per 100,000), New Hampshire (146), and Vermont (173).
Alaska also has a high rate of violent crime, at 838 cases per 100,000 population. As our map shows, the south-eastern states of New Mexico, Arkansas, Tennessee and Louisiana also show higher figures than much of the rest of the country.
