World Cup Final Sparks 32 Million Tweets
As the 2014 World Cup culminated in a nail-biting final between Germany and Argentina, the global Twitter community closely watched and commented on what was happening in Rio's famous Maracana stadium. According to Twitter, the final sparked 32.1 million tweets, second only to Germany's spectacular 7:1 thrashing of tournament host Brazil. Not surprisingly, Twitter activity peaked right after Mario Götze had scored the winning goal (556,499 tweets per minute) and after the final whistle had made Germany the new world champion (618,725 TPM).
