Following its merger with musical.ly in 2018, TikTok rapidly gained popularity in the United States and internationally. Like Snapchat before it, the social media app rose to prominence by appealing to young internet users, a target group that is always keen to move on to the next thing once a platform has hit the mainstream.
According to a bi-annual survey by investment bank Piper Sandler, TikTok is currently the third most popular social media platform among U.S. teens, trailing only Instagram and the aforementioned Snapchat. According to the survey conducted in the fall of 2020, almost 70 percent of American teenagers use TikTok at least once a months vs. just 39 percent for Twitter and 28 percent for Facebook.
