Grassroots or big bucks? Across the (seriously diminished) field of contenders for the 2020 nomination of both parties, different campaign styles are visible, but not as much as one might expect. The single highest donation in the field so far has been received by incumbent President Donald Trump at more than $2.7 million and was paid out by a PAC collecting money for him. Presidential hopeful Joe Biden’s single largest contribution comes from a medical technology company and is worth just 40 percent of that. It is still fairly valuable at almost $1.1 million.
Bernie Sanders’ highest donation is again just half of Biden’s – just over $500,000 from the University of California. The Vermont senator has in fact collected more small donations – almost 56 percent of all his donations were in amounts of $200 or less. Yet, this is just a little bit more than Donald Trump at 51 percent contributions from small donors, showing how the current president dabbles in both big and small donors. For Joe Biden, the percentage of small donors was just 37 percent.
