Despite his controversies, opposition or support for U.S. President Donald Trump has generally remained steady. From July 2017 to the present, nearly 50 percent of Americans have disapproved of Trump, while nearly 42 percent approved, according to poll averages compiled by FiveThirtyEight.
Trump made history on December 18 when he became the third U.S. president to be impeached after he was accused of soliciting foreign aid to interfere with the 2020 presidential election. The House of Representatives approved two articles of impeachment: one for abuse of power and another for obstruction of Congress. He could potentially be removed from office by the Senate if they find he committed high crimes and misdemeanors.
There were only three Democrats who opposed impeaching Trump, including Representatives Jared Golden of Maine and Collin C. Peterson of Minnesota. Representative Jeff Van Drew of New Jersey recently said he planned to switch party lines to become a Republican.
