Americans are nearly completely split when it comes to following the impeachment hearings. However, 21% of respondents said they were following the trials "very closely," according to a new poll, conducted by ABC News/Ipsos. Of those polled, 37% of respondents said they were paying attention to the hearings "somewhat closely." Less interested, 25% of people said they were "not so closely" following and 18% of respondents said they were not following at all.
The poll had a national sample of 506 people and was conducted from November 16 to 17. There was a margin of error of plus or minus 4.8 percentage points.
The impeachment inquiry was sparked after U.S. President Donald Trump spoke with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on July 25th. While Trump maintains it was a "totally perfect" phone call without bribery or extortion, Democrats accused him of withholding nearly $400 million in military aid from Ukraine unless they agreed to investigate Trump's 2020 political rival, former Vice President Joe Biden, and his son, Hunter Biden.
