New figures released by the World Health Organisation (WHO) have highlighted anew the global resurgence of measles. According to the figures, there was a 300 percent year on year increase in the first three months of 2019. As our infographic shows, the largest share of the surge happened in Madagascar, where there were 46,160 more cases in Q1 2019 than there were during the same period in 2018.
Referring to the inclusion of countries such as the U.S. and Israel at the top of this list and highlighting the dangers posed by the anti-vaccination movement, the WHO said: "Spikes in case numbers have also occurred in countries with high overall vaccination coverage, including the United States of America as well as Israel, Thailand, and Tunisia, as the disease has spread fast among clusters of unvaccinated people,".
