UK egg sales crack the 13 billion mark
Food
New figures on the UK egg industry reveal a continued rise in consumption, with the number eaten in the country last year cracking the 13 billion mark for the first time since the early 80s. The British Egg Industry Council has suggested that the increasing popularity could be down to the rise of the 'flexitarian' diet - whereby people consume less meat and may be counteracting the loss of protein by eating more eggs. In addition, updated advice from the Food Standards Agency in 2017 to allow pregnant women, children and the elderly to eat runny or raw eggs is thought to also be behind the resurgence.
