Michael Cohen is testifying before Congress today and is expected to allege that President Trump knew about the WikiLeaks release of DNC emails. WikiLeaks published the Democratic National Committee’s hacked emails in July of 2016. Whether or not President Trump knew about this leak in advance touches on core questions at the heart of Special Counsel Robert S. Mueller’s investigation into the Trump campaign.
Michael Cohen will start a three year prison sentence in April for lying about payments he made on behalf of President Trump to silence a former adult film star and a former Playboy model the president had affairs with. In addition Cohen plead guilty to lying to Congress, tax fraud, and making a false statement to a bank.
Despite President Trump’s running Twitter commentary on a variety of topics, the president has remained largely quiet on Michael Cohen, his former personal lawyer and Vice-President of the Trump Organization. Compared to his tweets about Special Counsel Mueller’s investigation, which he refers to colloquially as the “witch hunt,” Trump has remained almost silent about Michael Cohen, tweeting about him a total of 18 times over the course of nearly a year.
