For all of the negativity surrounding the election of Donald Trump as president, it really has turned out to be a positive for late night television in the US. Feeding off of the seemingly endless stories coming out of the White House and the president's Twitter feed, shows such as The Late Show with Stephen Colbert and Saturday Night Live have seen considerable ratings boosts and worldwide attention.

At the Emmys , this increase in popularity is again set to be emphasized, with Saturday Night Live receiving the second-highest number of nominations (21) - one behind the massively popular Game of Thrones from HBO.
