Smart toys are a potentially promising market, with sales forecasts looking very good.
However, the FBI warns against eavesdropping dolls and teddies. According to a recently released public service announcement, smart toys could pose a threat to child privacy and safety if they are connected to the internet.
As some toys come with data storage devices, microphones, sensors or cameras which could record conversations and store personal information, parents are recommended to consider these safety threats when purchasing talking toys.
To smart toy producers though, this recommendation could come as a dampener, as IDATE DigiWorld forecasted a potential market worth of €8.38 billion for 2020. This market potential might be at risk if products remain unsafe and infringe on privacy matters.
