As of 2023, New York, Pennsylvania, and Illinois were the U.S. states with the highest number of highway maintenance workers, with over 10,000 employees each. Even though California is the most populous state, it only ranked fourth, with 7,320 highway maintenance workers at that time. Delaware and Alaska had the last position in the ranking.
