In German secondary education the Gymnasium prepares students for higher education, such as a university degree, and finishes after year 12 or 13 (Hochschulreife). The Realschule, designed for intermediate students, has a wider spectrum of emphasis and is completed after year 10 (mittlere Reife). The Hauptschule is meant to train students for vocational education and ends after year 9 (Hauptschulabschluss).
