Considering the sheer number of Android devices out there and the pace at which Google's Play Store is currently growing, it looks like a certainty that Google Play will soon overtake Apple's App Store in terms of total downloads.

This chart illustrates the growth of the world's two largest app stores. Apple's App Store reached 50 billion cumulative downloads on May 15, just edging out Google's Play Store currently at 48 billion downloads.
