PayPal's company figures were generally lower in Q4 2024 than they were in Q4 2023. PayPal's revenue, for example, increased by four percent year-on-year, while it had recorded almost nine percent in Q4 2023 compared to the year before. A focus on profitability
PayPal's business model is under scrutiny since late 2023. In Q4 2023, newly appointed CEO Alex Chriss stated that profit would likely not grow as much in 2024 due to adjustments of about 1.8 billion U.S. dollars, including a restructuring of 120 million U.S. dollars. PayPal's take rate, for instance, was lower than it was before. This partially came from uncertainty around tighter margins due to United States inflation. Unbranded card checkout - which includes popular online payment processor Braintree - grew by two percent, down from 11 percent in Q3 2024. PayPal adoption in 2024 was high outside the United States, according to Statista's Consumer Insights. The number and share of merchants who offer PayPal as a payment option on their e-commerce websites reinforce this observation further: Nearly 35 percent of all German domains had a PayPal plug-in - while this was eight percent among U.S. web domains. For Europe, PayPal generally takes up two positions: On the one hand, it is sometimes a country's main online payment method available due to the lack of a local alternative - like in Germany.
