Revenue of Australian coffee shops and cafes has seen a year on year growth in recent years and are predicted to reach five billion Australian dollars in 2019/2020. By the same year, the number of businesses in the café and coffee shop industry is expected to reach 7.39 thousand, following a steady year on year growth since 2005/2006. Most coffee types cost an average of four dollars per cup. In 2018, the average price for a latte in an Australian coffee shop was 3.96 Australian dollars. A cappuccino or a flat white cost 3.99 Australian dollars, and a chai coffee would cost slightly more on average at 4.16 Australian dollars per cup.
Domestic coffee consumption
Consumption of coffee in Australia has been steadily increasing in recent years. During the 2019 financial year, Australians consumed around 1.875 million sixty-kilogram bags of coffee. Whilst this remained at the same level as the previous year, there has been a steady upward trend since the 2014 financial year, with the only notable exception being 2017; during this year, consumption dipped to 1.765 million sixty-kilogram bags.
