Opinions on U.S. President Donald Trump in the Netherlands 2017
Comparison to President Obama
President Trump’s predecessor, President Barack Obama, was a much-liked figure in the Netherlands. In 2016, over 90 percent of respondents stated to have confidence in the U.S. President, which at that point was Barack Obama. When that same survey was repeated a year later, confidence levels in the U.S. president had dropped to less than 20 percent – coinciding with the take-over of President Trump.
Approval of President Trump’s policies low
None of President Trump’s actions can count on popular approval in the Netherlands. A 2018 survey asked how Dutch respondents judged some of his policies. His North Korean policy was viewed most favorably, but even in this case less than one third of the respondents stated approval. His dealings with Iran and Russia were approved by just 18 and 14 percent of the survey respondents respectively.
