Consumption volumes were calculated by the source from per household per month data into per capita per year.

The purpose of the HABE is to provide a detailed account of household budgets in Switzerland. The survey has been ongoing since the 1st of January 2000. Random sampling is carried out in the seven largest regions, including approximately 3,000 participating households. The households record all their relevant expenditure and income for one month in the survey documents, supervised by experienced specialists by phone. The results of the HABE are based on a budgetary structure which realistically represents the permanent resident population of Switzerland.
