Annual number of e-money transactions in the EU-27 as a whole 2000-2022
E-money transactions made in the EU grew by over 13 percent in 2022, a significant slowdown in growth compared to previous years. Approximately 8.4 billion e-money purchases were made that year, even though this was more than double the amount recorded in 2018. It should be noted that "e-money", or electronic money, is not necessarily the same as "digital payments". E-money refers to the prepaid storage of money on either a hardware (chip card, magnetic devices) or software device. Mobile proximity digital payments refers to the use of wallets such as Apple Pay in a store. The source, in its definition of "e-money", does not distinguish between hardware and software. Within the EU, Luxembourg sees a significant amount of e-money transactions.
