Recent years have seen an increase in the amount of people suffering from undernourishment around the world. This is a reversal of the trend which had seen declining numbers till 2014. Between 2021 and 2023, about 735 million people were undernourished around the world. Undernourishment is defined as the status of persons, whose food intake regularly provides less than their minimum energy requirements.

Underourishment is defined as the status of persons, whose food intake regularly provides less than their minimum energy requirements. The average minimum energy requirement per person is about 1800 kcal per day. The exact requirement is determined by a person’s age, body size, activity level and physiological conditions such as illness, infection, pregnancy and lactation.
