Of HBO's total subscribers in 2017, 54 million were in the United States. HBO's over-the-top video on demand service HBO Now, launched in April 2015, reached five million subscribers in February 2018. As a result of the company's continued success worldwide, thanks to hit shows such as Game of Thrones, HBO's subscription revenue hit 5.5 billion U.S. dollars for the first time in 2017. This success comes at a cost, however, as the company spent almost 2.26 billion U.S. dollars on programming costs in 2017.
