In 2022, hard coal was estimated to account for 79.87 percent of total non-renewable energy resources worldwide, by far the largest share among non-renewable sources. Lignite made up another 8.26 percent share. Resources differ from reserves in that resources include all crude materials (both discovered and estimated), regardless of whether they may be extractable or not.

According to the source, the following energy sources belong to the respective commodity groups:
Non-conventional oil: oil sands / heavy oil and oil shale
Non-conventional natural gas: shale gas/tight gas, coal bed methane (CBM), gas hydrates and aquifers
The source distinguishes between "reserves" and "resources" as follows: "Reserves: Quantities of energy sources which were accurately recorded and can be commercially extracted using current technologies Resources: Quantities of energy sources which are either proved but currently not commercially recoverable, or expected on the basis of geological indicators and can be verified by exploration "
