As of the fourth quarter of 2010, Android officially took over as the most popular operating system for smartphones globally. Since then this OS has continued to increase its lead each and every quarter in the international market. The number of daily activations for Android devices, as can be seen in the graph above, has also been increasing rapidly for some time now. As of March 2013, approximately 1.4 million Android devices were being activated each day.

This operating system, offered by Google and first developed in 2008, was their response to Apple’s own smartphones and accompanying operating system, iOS which up until that time had been dominating the market. Unlike iOS which is solely used by its creator Apple, Android has been used by a number of different handset manufacturers in recent years. This has enabled Android to enjoy a very quick rise to market dominance.

Global shipment forecasts for android made by some industry experts, also anticipate that the smartphone operating system will continue to enjoy significant success into the future. Apple is also expected to hold a significant share of the market as the second most popular operating system.
