Mobile phone user penetration in Mexico 2015-2023

In 2023, 81.4 percent of households in Mexico owned a mobile phone. Although due to a change in methodology, this figure is not comparable to previous years, the penetration of these devices in Mexican households increased by almost ten percentage points since 2015.

Under the smartphone spell

The convenience of having access to it all in a few taps has turned smartphones into a technology hard to disregard. In 2024, the number of mobile internet users in Mexico was forecast to exceed 74 million. Thus, new chip and wireless broadband technologies have equipped millions in the country with handheld computers capable of performing almost any task with ease. As of the third quarter of 2023, Facebook and WhatsApp were the most used social media platforms in Mexico, reaching 93.2 percent and 92.2 percent of the country's online audiences.

The internet has gone mobile

Although PCs and laptops used to be the benchmark for internet access, smartphones have quickly eclipsed both of their usage rates. As of May 2023, smartphones were the device of choice for navigating the web in Mexico, used by more than 95 percent of internet users surveyed in the country. In terms of volume, widespread smartphone adoption has pushed these devices to account for over 57 percent share of all online traffic in the North American country as of December 2023.
