Cruise ships emit the highest amount of black carbon (BC) per ship of any vessel type, at 10 metric tons per year. By comparison, container ships are estimated to emit 3.5 metric tons of BC per ship per year. However, the number of cruise ships in the world is far lower than the number of container ships, which stood at more than 5,500 in 2022.
Black carbon, also known as ''soot'', accounts for roughly seven percent of global shipping industry GHG emissions. It is created through the partial combustion of diesel, coal, or other biomass. This short-lived climate pollutant contributes to atmospheric warming and has been linked to increased rates of ice melt in the Arctic.
