As of the end of 2021, approximately one-fifth of mining IPs were located outside of China. One of the reasons was that some cryptocurrency mining operations join so-called mining pools to cover their tracks. At the same time, the number of active Chinese mining host IPs amounted to 4.7 million. Despite the official ban on cryptocurrency mining in the country, many operations were still ongoing.
