Brand origin distribution in baby formula market in China 2007-2021
As of 2020, domestic infant formula brands accounted for 53 percent of China's infant formula market, surpassing international brands for the first time since 2007. As a result of the deadly milk scandal in 2008, many Chinese parents opted to buy imported milk formula rather than domestically produced milk. The Chinese government, however, is trying to reduce its reliance on imported baby formula. Consequently, domestic brands' market share is expected to grow steadily in the coming years.
