Preferred holiday food traditions in Japan 2022
The most popular food tradition tied to holiday seasons in Japan was the New Year and New Year's Eve meal, according to a survey conducted in 2022. Over 64 percent of respondents consumed traditional New Year meals every year, whereas eight percent partake in the festivities.
Common food served during the turn of the year include traditional dishes in stackable boxes (o-sechi), rice cake (mochi), and soup with mochi (zoni). Dishes with symbolic meaning such as soba noodles for longevity are also popular at the dawn of a new year.
