Due to the safety restrictions enacted during the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, several museums worldwide had to close to the public for long periods in 2020 and 2021. As a result, many institutions implemented budget cuts to face the financial losses caused by closures. According to an April 2021 study, roughly half of the surveyed museums in the United States implemented layoffs during the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. Overall, about 28 percent of institutions laid-off part-time staff. Meanwhile, 22 percent of museums involved in the research claimed to have laid-off full-time employees.
