Average monthly price of a glass of wine in the United Kingdom 2015-2022

In December 2022, a 175-milliliter glass of wine cost on average 429 pence in the United Kingdom. This is a slight increase compared to November of that year when the average price was two pence lower. From January 2015 to December 2022 the price of a glass of wine rose by 85 pence.

Price breakdown of a bottle of wine

The average bottle of wine in the UK cost slightly over six British pounds in 2020. For a bottle of wine an excise duty of 2.23 pounds is levied at manufacture. Packaging and logistics cost another 56 pence. These costs are stable for the average bottle in any price class. VAT, the share of money that is paid for wine, and the total margin go up with the price of a bottle of wine. For the average twenty-pound bottle the total margin amounts to 6.85 pounds.

Wine trade

The UK is a net importer of wine. In 2019 the country imported close to 3.5 billion pounds of wine, while it exported slightly over 650 million pounds of wine. Exports have been the highest ever in 2019 and have seen growth since 2015.
