coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic in 2020 had a huge impact on the sport industry, leading to the cancelation of many leagues and championships across all sports. One way in which professional sports were safely reintroduced was to play the games out in empty stadiums, with some teams and broadcasters superimposing realistic-looking fans into the stands to simulate a full stadium. In a survey conducted in the United States in May 2020, only five percent of respondents stated that this effect made watching the sporting event much more enjoyable.
