According to the Pew Research Center, 53 percent of Americans believe the United States plays a less important role in the world now than ten years ago. This is the first time in almost 40 years that the majority of Americans said that the country’s global power is in decline.
Back in 2004, just 20 percent of Americans felt that the United States was playing a less important role as world leader. Even though the reasons for the dramatic change of opinion are arguable, it can certainly be attributed to two long wars, economic chaos and the rise of a resurgent China.
