In 2013 Russia's natural gas network had a length of almost 163,900 kilometers, making it the country with the second largest natural gas pipeline network.

Natural gas pipelines in the United States

The United States has, by far, the most natural gas pipelines in the world, totaling almost two million kilometers as of 2013. In comparison, Russia had about 163,000 kilometers of natural gas pipelines in the same year. The natural gas pipeline system in the United States is an integrated transmission and distribution grid that is used to transport natural gas around the country (with the exception of Alaska and Hawaii). These pipelines bring natural gas from the production point to where it will be consumed. There are three major types of pipelines used in the United States: Gathering pipelines bring raw natural gas from production wells to transmission pipelines. These pipelines then transport gas from processing facilities to regions across the country. Lastly, distribution pipeline systems provide natural gas to homes and businesses through main lines (large distribution lines) and service lines. Distribution pipelines are found in communities around the country. Main lines and other small service lines account for the majority of the U.S.’s underground pipeline system.

U.S. natural gas reserves

The United States has 9.8 trillion cubic meters of proved natural gas reserves. Despite not having the largest volume of proved natural gas reserves, the U.S. is the largest consumer of natural gas in the world, totaling 736.8 billion cubic meters in 2013.
